Englewood Cliffs NJ: Prentice-Hall, Inc.. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1971). First Edition. Hardcover. 013753079X . [solid copy, light soiling/spotting to page edges; jacket worn and soiled, with various tears and general scrunching at spine extremities, ragged tear (internally tape-repaired) at upper corner of rear panel, spine scuffed and moderately faded]. A wonderfully savage satire of Walt Disney, here fictionally rendered as rampaging egomaniac Wade Ezekial Sampson, "creator of Ricky Rat, Dizzy Duck, Dirty Dog, Halfwit Hog, and a host of America's other favorite little cartoon animals." The action takes place during the 1930's, as the protagonist -- an ambitious young inbetweener named Ambrose, who hails from Bozeman, Montana -- gets involved in the studio's labor troubles. Hollywood fiction bibliographer Anthony Slide notes that "the novel presents a frightening and surrealistic view of Los Angeles, where police brutality is the norm and anything unpleasant, such as an earthquake, is not reported in the newspapers for fear of scaring away Easterners." Whatever the book may lack in historical verisimilitude, however, is more than compensated for by sheer outrageousness. Rather a tough book to find; when I first listed a copy for sale, some years ago, I speculated that "perhaps Uncle Walt has been buying up every available copy from beyond the grave." I was joking, although that hasn't stopped other booksellers from taking my comment with a straight face and suggesting that there actually has been some kind of Disney corporate conspiracy to "suppress" the book. Far as I know, 'tain't so, McGee. . (Inventory #: 14009)
