This sentiment authored by George McDuffie of South Carolina was probably for the daughter of Charles A. Wickliffe, member of the U.S. House of Representatives. McDuffie's inscription to young Miss Wickliffe, in approximately 75 words, writes - "You have made a requisition upon my muse...at a moment when she is jaded & lanquid...and I can not deny myself the honor & gratification of inscribing my name upon it, as a testimonial of my regard, and of my candid wishes for your future happiness." Charles A. Wickliffe was the 14th Governor of Kentucky. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1823-1833. The Wickliffe family was comprised of three sons and five daughters. Charles A. Wickliffe died in 1869 while visiting one of his daughters in Maryland. George McDuffie (1790-1851) was the 55th Governor of the State of South Carolina. He served in U.S. Congress from 1821-1834 and in the U.S. Senate from 1843-1846. McDuffie evolved into a advocate for States Rights and was a strong supporter of "Nullification."
