Biblical biographies of select prophets and apostles with => 18 gorgeous steel engravings done by E. Finden, W.H. Mote, B. Eyles, C. Cook, and W.H. Egelton after John Wood. Following each engraving save one is a short biographical chapter of the man depicted written by an American preacher; the image of St. Simon however is accompanied by an essay on St. Simeon (and comes with an almost page-long explanation of that in the preface).
Binding: Black textured calf, spine lettered in gilt amidst sinuous embossed leaf-and-vine designs in blind; covers with gilt oval center medallion design surrounded by elaborate and elegant embossed arabesque strapwork frames in blind. Gilt roll on turn-ins and different gilt roll on board edges; all edges gilt.
Provenance: 19th-century inked signature of Jamizen(?) H. Lane and later personal rubber-stamp of B.L. Starling on front fly-leaf.
Binding not in Wolf, From Gothic Windows to Peacocks. Bound as above, front board expertly reattached and rear joint (inside) reinforced; leather refurbished and polished. Ownership indicia as above, two instances of staining (one from ink and one associated with something laid in) that affect surrounding pages including one plate and a tissue guard, otherwise light foxing around plates only. => Overall quite clean, even beautifully crisp, with engravings that are exceptionally well-executed.
