1682 · Oxonii
Greek and Latin edition of two major works — Apologia vel Legatio pro Christianis and De resurrectione mortuorum — from Ante-Nicene Christian apologist and Greek convert Athenagoras; the Apology is in Conrad Gesner's translation and the De resurrectione in Peter Manning's, both as edited by Bishop of Oxford John Fell. The texts are printed in Greek and Latin with a few footnotes, separate title-pages for each work, and an index; the title-page bears the classic engraving of the Sheldonian Theatre. The duo were first published by Estienne in 1557; Henri himself actually commissioned the Gesner translation.
Evidence of Readership: A reader has carefully used pencil to add numerals, marginal flourishes, and a handful of marginal notes in French throughout the Latin portion of the text.
Provenance: On title-page: The initials "E.C." in red; a 1693 inked ownership inscription, "Monast. S. Petr. Latin. Ord. S. Bened. Cong. S. Maun. Catal. inscrip."; a pencilled inscription dated 1845. Later in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.
