The work is artist Avner Moriah's exquisite illustrated rendering and visual interpretation of the biblical Book of Genesis (Bereshit). The vibrant color and fascinating textures of the images have been reproduced in incredible detail through digital printing, from the artist's original gouache and watercolor work. The artwork takes its visual inspiration from figurative work in the ancient art of the near east including Egypt and Mesopotamia, often times taking the form of a series of small individual scenes or vignettes. These influences combine with a more modern style that is often simple, rough-hewn, and often more abstract, resulting images that convey emotion and meaning. The imagery accompanies the masterful calligraphy of Izzy Pludwinski, reproducing the biblical text. Printed on Arsh heavy stock paper. The hardcover is accompanied by an informative companion softcover volume detailing the artist's process and inspiration for his work. Each page of the Genesis is reproduced, clarifying which corresponding biblical passages are being visualized, and dissecting the content of the images. Also included are some additional background notes. Hardcover in fine condition. Companion book with cover and first four leaves with slight bend at top right corner. Cover with a few minor scratches and smudges. Books in overall near fine to fine condition. * The artist is current working on larger format deluxe versions of each of the Five Books of Moses, reproduced his from the original gouache paintings, of which three (the Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus volumes) have already been produced. Each volume is priced $16,000.
