Autobiography of an African-American federal government worker, his account of a 40 year career with the Internal Revenue bureau and other agencies. In 1898 Paynter published his reminiscences of his time as a black sailor in the old Navy *Joining the Navy or Abroad with Uncle Sam* and in 1930 he published a novel about escaped slaves, *Fugitives of the Pearl.
