Contemporary straight-grain burgundy morocco, gilt double-ruled border with stamped rose to each corner within triple-ruled border to both boards, backstrip with five raised bands with gilt lettering, rules, and roses to panels, dentelles, top-edge gilt, other edges uncut, marbled end-papers. Minor foxing to uncut edges, otherwise a near perfect set in a sumptuous binding. First edition thus. Transcribed from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library Magdalene College Cambridge by the Rev. Mynors Bright, with Lord Braybrooke’s notes, edited and with additions by Wheatley. First published in 1825, though not in its entirety by Henry Colburn, whom also published the second edition of 1828, and third of 1848-49. The fourth revised and corrected edition was published in 1854 by Colburn’s successors, Hurst and Blackwell. The copyright of Lord Braybrooke’s edition was purchased by Henry G. Bohn, and published again in 1875-79 by Bickers and Son. Engravings vary in medium between copper-plate and wood, of people, places and objects relating to the famous naval officer and, diarist.
