INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, "for Greg Gatenby / Susan Sontag / 2 Oct 1981 / Toronto," and additionally INSCRIBED below that: "Again, this time to Greg -- / 20 Oct 1984 / Toronto" (without a second signature); the inscribee's ownership signature also appears at the top of the page. Sontag's second collection of essays, eight pieces originally published from 1966-1969, on topics such as modern art, pornography as an art form, the relationship between theatre and cinema, Ingmar Bergman's film PERSONA, the work of New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, the cultural and political scene in America (in 1966), and her trip to Hanoi in 1968. The inscribee was the founder and longtime director of Toronto's International Festival of Authors, and caused a bit of a controversy in 2004 when he announced his intention to sell off his collection of inscribed/signed books from his collection (including, presumably, this one).
