Cloth
1962 · Moscow
Moscow: ?????????????, 1962. Cloth. Good. 4to. 26.5 by 21 cm. 424 pp. Many color plates -- these are photo-based color drawings, for the most part. Also many b/w text illustrations, mostly photos. This cookbook, originally published in 1939 and revised afterward, was developed by scientists at the Soviet Institute of Nutrition in the Academy of Medical Sciences. With its lavish illustrations, the book was more than a practical handbook in the kitchen, but also a potent piece of Soviet propaganda. Many of the recipes were not feasible for the average family during the Soviet Era because of the chronic scarcity in grocery stores, but they nonetheless suggested how life was good under the Soviet system. Also, the writers touted the success of the Soviet food industry in the introductory chapter. Moderate wear to binding. Scattered soiling of the pages.
