FIRST EDITION of Thomson's "pioneering theory of the conduction of electricity in gases." – DSB. It originated from an 1899 paper reporting on the experimental work that formed the basis of Thomson's famous CONDUCTION OF ELECTRICITY THROUGH GASES (Cambridge, 1903) which is cited in Dibner, PMM, Haskell Norman Library and others. In 1906 Thomson won the Nobel Prize for physics, "in recognition of the great merits of his theoretical and experimental investigations on the conduction of electricity by gases." "Thomson was President of the Royal Society from 1915 to 1920 and Noble Prize Winner in Physics in 1906. He made the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge the greatest experimental school in physics ever known and was succeeded there by his pupil Rutherford." – PMM. "In 1897 Thomson destroyed the concept of the atom as the base of the physical world by announcing that cathode rays were composed of negatively charged sub-atomic particles (later named "electrons") with a very large ratio of charge to mass, a ratio which was later determined to exceed that of hydrogen by a factor of 1,000. He also determined that the mass of particles, which he called "corpuscles," remained constant whatever their origin, indicating that they represented a universal component of all matter. The present work records Thomson's experiments with gaseous ions produced by the recently-discovered Rontgen ray." – Norman (2076).
