by CRUDEN, Alexander (M.A.).
Philadelphia:: Thomas Wardle, 1830., 1830. 4to. 16, 856 pp. Half title, engraved frontispiece portrait of the author; foxed throughout. Printed largely in three columns. Original full tree calf, raised bands, gilt spine bands, red gilt-stamped spine label; corners showing. Provenance: Signature of Reverend John Grosvenor Tarbell (1793-1882), Cambridge, Harvard College. VERY GOOD COPY IN A SPLENDIDLY PRESERVED ORIGINAL TREE CALF BINDING. Alexander Cruden (1701-70) was a bookseller and editor; in 1735 he was made bookseller to the Queen. The first edition of his Concordance was published in 1737, the third edition of 1769 was dedicated to the King. The present edition contains the author's prefaces to earlier editions, and a history of Concordances from the first compiled, by the Dominican Friar, Hugo de S. Charo (d.1262). The life of the author is entertainingly frank. Cruden's Concordance is still published. FULL TITLE: A complete concordance to the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament: or, A dictionary and alphabetical index to the Bible: very useful to all Christians who seriously read and study the inspired writings. In two parts ... To which is added, A concordance to the books called Apocrypha. The whole digested in an easy and regular method: which, together with the various significations and other improvements now added, renders it more useful than any book of the kind hitherto published. From the tenth London edition, carefully rev. and corrected by the Holy Scriptures. To which is added, an original life of the author.
