This document mocks Van Buren's alleged transformation from leader of the national Democratic Party, to the anti-slavery Free Soil candidate for President in 1848. Until rejected by the Democrats, and seduced by the allurements of the presidency, Van Buren had been the mouthpiece of extremist pro-slavery Southerners. His convenient turnabout is mere hypocrisy. Free Soil material is significant because it presages the dissolution of the Democratic Party and then the Union.
