Title page in red and black lettering. Title vignette. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Dedication page to Sir Richard Ellys ornated with a splendid engraved vignette by Dutch engraver François Morellon la Cave (1696-1768).
Published six years after the death of its author, this first edition of "Tractatus stigmologicus" is a Latin essay on Hebrew accentuation in Biblical text.
This work is complete with its three hors-text charts, including one folded.
Original boards darkened and heavily rubbed along edges, with some abrasion to leather. Previous owner's gift bookplate on inside of front cover (Presented by Reverend R. B. Taggart). Modern endpapers and fly leaves. Both hinges reinforced with binder's tape. Previous owner's handwritten name (Rev. Taggart) dated Mount Pleasant, PA, May 10, 1883 at upper margin of title page (not affecting lettering). Ex-library stamp along fore-edge and at lower margin of title (not affecting lettering). First page of David Mill's preface detached but present. Some age-toning and foxing throughout. Pages somewhat rippled. Text in Latin, with some Hebrew. Binding in overall poor to fair, interior in good to good+ condition. About the author: Thomas Boston (1676-1732) was a Scottish church leader, theologian and philosopher.
