Ruth Seid was the lesbian daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants who worked for the WPA and began selling short stories to the likes of Harpers but also Crisis and New Masses. Her writing usually dealt with the struggles of immigrants in the USA. This, her first novel concerns Russian Jewish immigrants. In a blurb at the back Richard Wright compares the book favorably to Joyce's "Dubliners
