White notes that the "chief aspirants for predictive fame are, Murphy, Zadkiel, Simmonite, and Hind". White discusses each (Murphy who is unintelligible and non-scientific, Zadkiel and Simmonite who promote the Astral Theory which he finds scientific and quite beautiful, etc). Newton, Airy, Herschel and others enter his analysis along the way.
