New York: Farrar Straus and Company. Very Good+ in Good dj. 1949. Early printing. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [light shelfwear and minor soiling to bottom edges, very slight fraying of cloth at top rear corner; jacket a little faded at spine, approximately 1/2-inch piece missing at top of spine, extending a bit into upper left corner of front panel, tiny chip at base of spine, slight insect-nibbling damage at bottom of front flap]. The author's first novel, "based on actual experience" (per the jacket blurb), is narrated from the point of view of a man confined to a VA hospital, and afflicted by what we would today recognize as PTSD. "It is a direct report on a mental hospital for veterans; of its staff -- some good, some bad, some indifferent, some incompetent; its patients -- pitiful, horrifying, and often hopeless; of its rackets, brutality, and occasional kindness." Includes a long jacket blurb by Eudora Welty, who calls it "a thrilling piece of work." The contemporary Kirkus reviewer compared it unfavorably to Mary Jane Ward's "The Snake Pit," while turning his (or her) nose up a bit at the book's "incidents of homosexuality [and] the frequent coarseness of expression."
