"The following year, 1845, he became involved with the dissection and drawing of snails for a book on North American mollusks written by Amos Binney and edited by Augustus A. Gould. The 1851 publication of this book brought Leidy immediate recognition, along with membership in Boston Society of Natural History and Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences. The Academy appointed Leidy as its librarian in 1845 and then as its curator in 1846, a position he would hold for the rest of his life. Just three years after earning his M.D. Leidy entirely abandoned his medical practice to devote his professional life to the study of living organisms. (Inventory #: MRM1237)
