PERPETUUM MOBILE; OR, SEARCH FOR SELF-MOTIVE POWER, DURING THE 17TH, 18TH, AND 19TH CENTURIES
by Dircks, Henry
London: E. & F. N. Spon, 1868 . Presumed First Edition. thick 8vo., 558 pp., G; blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine (age-toned a darker blue, lettering legible); moderate wear to boards, liquid damage to hinges; cocked spine, no shelf lean; boards shaken, cracked hinges, binding intact yet fragile; tear to top half of title page at gutter; heavy age-toning/wear to text-block; mild age-toning to interior (text legible, illustrations clear), closed tears and chipping with material loss to corners of many leaves; frontispiece, age-toning top left corner, tearing to aforementioned corner possibly repaired with glue and/or archival tape; many black-and-white diagrams "from various authentic sources, in papers, essays, letters, paragraphs, and numerous patent specifications" stated to title page; blue stamp to title page with white circular sticker (perhaps an attempt to obscure stamp lettering); pub. 1861 stated to title and copyright pages, unpaginated catalogue of scientific publications by Spon and other advertisements to back of volume dated 1868; Dirks (1806-1817) was a British engineer credited with designing Pepper's ghost-a projection technique still employed in theater performances, amusement parks, museums, television, concerts, &c., to create "ghostly" illusions-it was ultimately named after John Henry Pepper (1821-1900), who created the first working version of the device in 1862; subsequent to Pepper's ghost, Dirks delved into the subject of perpetual motion-in PERPETUUM MOBILE he presents the subject from a neutral academic stance, though eventually he deemed inventing such a device preposterous; shelved Case 10. Dupont.
