Hollywood: (Copyright by Bob Hope). Very Good+. (c.1941). First Edition. Hardcover. (laminated pictorial boards, no dust jacket) [minor external soiling, a bit of wear to cloth at spine ends, very slight lifting of the laminate at lower left edge of front cover]. (B&W photographs, cartoon illustrations) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Hope on the ffep, with what was apparently his generic inscription: "Honestly! It's 'Nothing but the Truth' / Bob Hope." (This also served as a plug for his then-current Paramount film, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, released in October 1941.) This small book, a jokey gag-filled "Life of" BH -- which is essentially an extended comedy routine rather than any kind of autobiography -- was issued in several formats. There was a softcover edition, available as a premium from Pepsodent toothpaste (both by mail and over-the-counter with the purchase of a Pepsodent product), and a hardcover, at least some (perhaps all) of which were issued in a box with a glassine dust jacket on the book itself. (Copies in the original box, or retaining their original glassine jacket, are uncommon today.) Of the hardcover, an unknown number were (like this one) signed by Hope with either the aforementioned inscription or the more generic "Best Wishes." [To be honest, we have to entertain the possibility that at least some of the inscriptions/signatures may have been executed by surrogates or secretaries rather than by Hope himself -- although an examination of a number of examples confirms, at least, that they are all original (i.e. not printed and therefore not precisely identical).] The introduction is by Hope's erstwhile on-screen partner, crooner-actor Bing Crosby -- and was probably written by the same cadre of gagmen who obviously wrote the rest of the book. (Lest no promotional stone be left unturned, the book's title was also appropriated for another Hope feature film, two years later.) Signed by Author . (Inventory #: 23554)
