Our New Music: Leading Composers in Europe and America
by Copland, Aaron
New York/London: Whittlesey House / McGraw-Hill Book Company. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1941). 2nd printing. Hardcover. [solid clean book, light age-toning to edges of text block, one-time owner's signature on ffep; jacket shows some wear at extremities, short closed tear at top front hinge, small tear and a few tiny nicks at top edge of rear panel]. The great American composer, in his second book, "shows first of all how contemporary music grew naturally out of the work of such masters as Moussorgsky and Debussy, through Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, Hindemith, to the work of younger Americans like Roy Harris, Virgil Thomson, and Marc Blitzstein. The book offers a brilliant panorama of fifty years of new music [and] also provides an introduction to the formative ideas of the period, and a survey of recent and current trends." Copland also discusses many individual European composers, and includes "a special section devoted to six outstanding Americans, together with a discussion of Carlos Chavez and a review of certain aspects of Mr. Copland's own career as a composer." (The six American composers are: Charles Ives, Roy Harris, Roger Sessions, Walter Piston, Virgil Thomson, and Marc Blitzstein.) The book's last chapter, entitled "Music in the Films," expresses his thoughts about the nature and technique of film scoring, which at the time of writing he had done just twice for Hollywood features: for OF MICE AND MEN and OUR TOWN (although in his essay he doesn't really discuss his own work on either one). .
