London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1949. Gilt cloth over boards. Cloth a bit smudged and dull, but a good copy in dust jacket with chipping and soiling along the top edge, and a square inch loss at the lower fore-corner of the upper panel. First edition. Collaborative novel written while the authors were imprisoned in Italy during WWII. The manuscript was written sometimes in Billany's hand, sometimes in Dowie's. After Italy's surrender in September of 1943 they were released, and were later seen in Mantua in December of that year. They were never seen again, and are presumed to have been recaptured. The manuscript was sent to Billany's parents by an Italian farmer when he was able and they received it in the Spring of 1946. There is a notice asking for any information regarding the fate of the two men to be forwarded to the publishers. (Inventory #: WRCLIT78773)
