Rare signed mailing circular launching "The Irish Review
by COLUM, Padraic (1881 - 1972)
Dublin, 1911. unbound. very good. Exceedingly rare and possibly unique signed mailing circular for the newly formed journal "The Irish Review," three pages of text consisting of a biography, a list of perspective contributors, and the original order form, in part: "...The First Number of The Irish Review, A Monthly Magazine of Irish Literature, Art and Science, will be issued in March, 1911. The Irish Review will be for Ireland what such periodicals as "The Quarterly Review," "The Edinburgh Review," "Le Mercure de France," have been for neighboring countries. It will be written by Irish authors and by writers on subjects of Irish interest; it will be produced and published in Ireland, and will be indispensable to educated Irish people..." Boldly signed directly above "The Irish Review" masthead: "P. Colum." Note: Upon Padraic Colum's departure to America, Joseph Plunkett edited the final issues of "The Irish Review" as literary Ireland became involved with the Irish Volunteers and plans for the Easter Rising. Plunkett would eventually be executed in 1916 for his role as a leader in the Rising. In all there were 42 issues of "The Irish Review" published from March 1911 to September 1914. Some weaknesses at the original mailing folds; pages fully detached at the center fold. Good condition. Irish poet and playwright who was one of the founders and editor of the short-lived "Irish Review," Dublin, (1911 - 1914) and a founder of the Irish Theatre. In 1914 he and his wife traveled to the United States for what was intended to be a visit of a few months but lasted for most of the rest of their lives.
