signed unbound
1845
by McCULLOUGH, John (1805 - 1870)
1845. unbound. fine. Scarce example of his oversized signature: "Very Truly Yours, John McCullough," removed from a letter and mounted to a heavier stock, 2.75 x 4.5 inches, no place, no date, 1845. Boldly signed and in fine condition. Pioneer clergyman whose fascination by the drama of the Alamo influenced his decision to settle in the Republic of Texas in 1836; became chaplain in the third Congress of Texas before Statehood. He is credited with organizing the first Presbyterian Church in Galveston in 1840 and founding Austin College in 1849. An ardent abolitionist in his native Pennsylvania, McCullough came to accept southern culture and slavery, but he continued to preach for black congregations, even though he was warned that such behavior would not be accepted, and sure enough it culminated into several assassination attempts.
