by LOTTER, Tobias Conrad
Augsburg, 1792. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 23 x 19.75". This detailed map of Norway, originally by Matthäus Seutter, is one of the great maps of the kingdom. This edition of the map, issued from Seuetter's copperplate by Tobias Conrad Lotter in 1770, dates to the period of Norway's union with Denmark, yet it focuses significantly on the geographical area of Norway, including only small parts of Sweden. Ample detail describes cities, rivers, and mountains. An inset in the upper left displays the northernmost area of Norway that extends beyond the map's boundaries. In the lower left, the title is inscribed on a plinth, atop which members of the Norwegian kingdom stand. The map is in good condition with few chips or tears. Tobias Conrad Lotter was a German mapmaker based in Augsburg. His work dates to the revival of mapmaking in 18th century Germany that was spurred in large part by the work of Matthäus Seutter. Lotter, who married Seutter's daughter, worked on behalf of the Seutter firm as a master engraver and took over half of the printing house upon Seutter's death. His individual work, combined with his republication of Seutter's maps under his own imprint, allowed Lotter to match, if not surpass, his predecessor's reputation as one of the most prominent German cartographers of the period.
