Unsung Genius: The Passion of Dancer-Choreographer Jack Cole
by Loney, Glenn
New York: Franklin Watts. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. 0-531-09765-X . [nice tight book, minimal handling wear; jacket lightly rubbed, faint wear along bottom edge of front panel, one tiny closed tear at bottom of rear panel]. (B&W photographs) Uncommon biography of this influential yet rather enigmatic figure in the world of dance. "Obsessed by his insensate desire for perfection, Jack Cole stands isolated among the elusive figures of American theatre and film. Even those who built their own reputations by plagiarizing his talent inevitably use the term genius to describe him. Nurtured by major historical dance figures such as Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, Cole forged a visionary style imitated by virtually every choreographer to follow him." The book discusses Cole's professional work quite thoroughly, but seems to be somewhat evasive about certain aspects of his personal life, particularly his relationship with his "longtime companion" and sole heir -- who, it's noted at one point, declined to discuss the matter with the author (who includes a very unflattering account of the man's mis-handling of Cole's memorabilia following his death in 1974). Included are appendices detailing Cole's work in the theatre and movies -- the latter including work with Betty Grable, Jane Russell, Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe. His film work (sometimes uncredited) included COVER GIRL, GILDA, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, LES GIRLS and LET'S MAKE LOVE. Laid in is a small typed (not signed) note from the author, on the publisher's printed "With Compliments!" slip, reading in its entirety: "I hope you like the book and I look forward to talking with you when I'm in Los Angeles. / Glenn Loney." .
