Leporello. Patterned silk covered boards. Custom Quarter Morocco Clamshell Box.
by Koshima
Leporello. Patterned silk covered boards. Custom Quarter Morocco Clamshell Box. . Very Good. N.d., circa 1870. Closed, the leporello measures 30 by 18.5 cm. The 28 watercolors are mounted on white card, which is speckled with gold and silver specks. Compared to color woodblock, the colors have greater variety as well as a richness, and there is an immediacy lacking in printed costume plates. The costumes are of officiers, knights, merchants and priests. Gold endpapers, and one page of Japanese calligraphic text. We know the name of the artist from a pencilled note, but nothing else about Koshima. The same note indicates that this is from the collection of Mr. Yamaga. Condition: slk cover frayed and worn along edges and by corners. Otherwise, paintings are fresh, box is pristine.
