Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked in period style with raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece, gilt tooling to board edges, hinges mended. A few minor surface cracks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, recent owner bookplate to front pastedown. Moderate toning to text, large early owner stamp to verso of title page. $350. * First edition. Burnett, an Anglican priest and theologian spent most of his professional life as rector of West Kington, Wilts. He was the Boyle lecturer in 1724-1725. His Essay on Government "endeavour[s] to establish a right Notion of Government from natural and certain Principles" (1). A Dublin edition was published in 1716.
