Pocahontas and the Elders: A Folkpiece in Four Acts
1933·Chapel Hill NC
by Geddes, Virgil
Chapel Hill NC: M.A. Abernethy. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, very slight bumping to spine ends and bottom corners; jacket in nearly perfect condition, with just a small abrasion near top of spine, tiny smudge line on front panel]. Historically-based "folkpiece," probing "the motives of the people in America's first colonial settlement. From the familiar legend of Pocahontas, together with much unknown and previously unused material, [the playwright] has constructed a biting play: for America a new kind of historical play, pertinent in its irony and implications, very American, and a challenge to the theatre." Geddes, a native of Nebraska, was a poet and critic as well as a playwright; he spent some time in Paris in the 1920s, and after returning to the U.S. was very active in the American theatre scene, including a stint as co-director of the Federal Theater Project's experimental section. His best-known work as a playwright is probably "Native Ground" (a 3-play cycle), written in 1932 but most notably produced in New York by the WPA's Federal Theatre Project in 1937. (A flyer advertising that engagment, at the Venice Theatre, is laid in to this copy of the book.) . (Inventory #: 23673)
