4to. London: Hodder and Stoughton, . 4to, 197pp. With a tipped-in frontispiece and 11 color-plates with captioned tissues, and monochrome drawings throughout the text, many full-page. Original blue cloth, upper cover and backstrip richly gilt, very good. First trade edition after the signed limited edition, issued in blue, red, or green cloth. Danish artist Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was the son of the director of the Royal Danish Theater and after art school he was quickly recruited as a book illustrator; his Fairy Tales was delayed for a year so as not to compete with another version illustrated by Robinson. That edition is now less well known whereas this version is one of the best known illustrated books of the century. He turned to stage design for the Danish State Theater and only illustrated three more books before moving to Hollywood where he designed sets for movies and acted in small walk-on parts. He died in California in 1957. (Inventory #: 109949)
