Italy. Handbook for Travellers. First Part: Northern Italy including Leghorn, Florence, Ravenna, and Routes through Switzerland and Austria.
by Baedeker, Karl.
Small 8vo. Leipzig: Karl Baedeker Publisher, 1906. Small 8vo, lxiv, 592 pp., with numerous color maps including many fold-outs. Full red pebbled cloth, stamped in blind, with gilt titles, marbled edges, red and green ribbon markers. A few trivial spots on the upper cover, endpapers a little soiled, otherwise a nice, sound copy. A few scattered traveller’s notes in ink and pencil, particularly to the front endpapers, indicate that this copy accompanied someone by the name of Merriam on a tour of Italy in April, 1910. Thirteenth remodelled edition with 30 maps, 40 plans, and a panorama. As in all Baedeker guides, the enormously informative text is triumph of concision. The maps and travel plans are meant to aid the traveler so as to make him independent, and thus the captain of his own voyage, immune to the tricks and traps that befall the average tourist.
