NY: Henry Holt, 1933. National Recovery Administration Edition. Signed presentation from Helene Schweitzer, wife of theologian and physician Albert Schweitzer [1875-1965]: "To Bassett W. Hough with much gratitude from [then uses printed title "The Forest Hospital At Lambarene] & its New York representative, Helene Schweitzer. NY. 24/II 1939." With the ink name of "Ann Hough" on the front endpaper- daughter of Bassett. In 1913 Albert & Helene founded a hospital (now the Albert Schweitzer Hospital) at Lambarene in Gabon. In the first nine months, the couple examined 2,000 patients, some traveling hundreds of kilometers to get there. Helene played many roles: nurse, anesthetist and overseeing sanitary methods for preparing medical equipment.
