London: John Murray, 1819. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 72pp. Lacks first half-title. Modern black morocco spine, marbled paper boards, leather letting label, gilt. Bound without the final blank, so the state is unknown, but it is likely second state. Occasional light foxing else in very good condition. Both half titles have signatures of early owners. 'Mazeppa' is followed by the 'Fragment', also known as 'Fragment of a Novel', an unfinished horror story that is one of the first in English to feature a vampire theme. This is Lord Byron's contribution from that dark and stormy night in Switzerland that gave us Shelley's 'Frankenstein' and Polidori's 'Vampyre'. Polidori based his story on Byron's 'Fragment'. Randolph, p. 70; Wise I, p. 132.
