Typed Letter, Signed. 1 p., on New York Post letterhead; undated (ca 1939). "Dear News Dealers..."
[New York: ca 1939]
by BROUN, Heywood
[New York: ca 1939]. Broun (1888-1939), a left-leaning syndicated columnist and sportswriter, was a charter member of the Algonquin Round Table, a one-time Socialist candidate for Congress, and a co-founder of the Newspaper Guild. Broun had published his widely popular weekly column "It Seems To Me" in the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain throughout the Great Depression, but in 1939, Scripps-Howard terminated Broun's contract, prompting his move to The Post. The present letter announces the move in a humorous, mock-hardboiled vein, concluding: "I'm in the New York Post. I'd like to have people hear about it. I don't see why there should be any secrets on this ball club. I'll promise to blab. Will you do as much for me?" Alas, Broun's Post career was cut tragically short: he died of pneumonia in December of 1939, having published only one column. A poignant letter, likely one of the last things written by this popular Jazz-age figure. Typed letter of 19 lines, signed in blue ink below the close. Addressed "Dear News Dealers...," announcing Broun's new column in the New York Post. Paper toned, with old tape reinforcement along left margin; chips and brief tears to extremities; brief ink note at bottom left, in an unidentified hand: "Note: Broun died a few days after this was written." Good or better, with the signature strong and clear. (Inventory #: 38042)
