London:: Victor Gollancz, 1937., 1937. 8vo. 397, pp. 24 photographic plates, tables, index. Original printed orange black-stamped wrappers; some soiling and light wear, corner creased. Very good. Foreword by Sidney Webb (1859-1947), one of the earliest members of the Fabian Society. Sigerist was a life-long believer in socialized medicine, and played a critical role in the establishment of Canada's national health system. This is a "Left Book Club edition – Not for Sale to the Public." The picture of Soviet medicine is favorably biased. The photographic plates are classic images of healthcare in the workers' paradise. Still, Sigerist stays true to statistical realities regarding the core of health care in the Soviet Union of 1935.
