Carp has always been considered the most valued and auspicious of the edible fishes in Japan. Kuroda (?1843-?1908), was a samurai serving the Nihonmatsu fiefdom (today's Fukushima Prefecture). In this work, he describes how to construct superior ponds for the carp and to keep the ponds healthy, how to transport young carp from pond to pond, and methods of breeding and raising healthy carp for eating. The woodcuts depict well-constructed ponds of various sizes, breeding areas in the ponds, specially made containers and baskets to transport infant carp, nets of various sizes, and ideal weeds for the ponds.
