Scottish historical novelist Porter (1776–1850) spins a tale set in Poland in the era of Stanislaus II Augustus (1764–95). First printed in 1803 it contains in some parts overtones of the Gothic and in one major portion is almost a novel of manners. Title-page printed in black and gold.
