Gailliard on the front pastedown; Gaillaird (1859-1913), a South Carolina native and West Point graduate, was in charge of the construction of the central portion of the Panama Canal, crossing the continental divide, the "notorious Culebra Cut through the backbone of the isthmus" (Wikipedia).
