ca. 1910 · [St. Johns?]
by MacGREGOR, William, Sir, Governor of Newfoundland.
[St. Johns?]: n.p., ca. 1910. 27 cm; 64-222, X (of XI) pages. Lacks final leaf with page XI; pages IX-X supplied in facsimile. Bound in recent half cloth over marbled boards, titled on spine.
Astonishingly well-traveled (considering the absence of mechanization), Dr. William MacGregor was posted as a medical officer first in the Seychelles, then in Mauritius, then he moved up the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer in Fiji before his appointment to the post of administrator of British New Guinea, and later Governor of Lagos! In 1904, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland. In that post, he organized and personally conducted a scientific expedition to Labrador, the aim of which was to survey its coast and investigate its natural resources. The results of this expedition, published here, were of anthropological as well as geographical and meteorological interest, for which he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Extremely rare. (Inventory #: 5887)
