Alexander Gil the Elder, 1565-1635, was an English scholar, spelling reformer, and high-master of St Paul's School, where his pupils included John Milton. The Logonomia Anglica was his English grammar dedicated to James I. Written in Latin, it was first issued in 1619 and reissued with numerous corrections in 1621, with both editions appearing while Gil had John Milton as a pupil. It opens with suggestions for a phonetic system of English spelling. In his section on grammatical and rhetorical figures Gil quotes freely from Edmund Spenser, George Wither, Samuel Daniel, and other English poets. It was more comprehensive than earlier works, and devoted attention to syntax and prosody. Among his suggested changes to make English more phonetic were reviving the Anglo-Saxon signs ð (eð) and þ (þorn) for the two sounds of th, and the use of the letter ŋ (eŋ) [wikipedia]. Dupont.
