A fun novel set in 16th- and 17th-century France. from a Victorian writer of historical romances. Stanley J. Wegman's (1855–1928) stories were immensely popular during his day, but they are now often forgotten among other Victorian works.

Binding: Publisher's light mauve cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Front board decorated with gilt lettering and a weapons-bearing crowd marching in front of a dark purple-stamped building with a yellow-stamped sky. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed.
Provenance: On the front free endpaper, the signature and two name-stamps of Sarah E. Lembeck. Bound as above; extremities and joints lightly rubbed, spine slightly cocked. Provenance markings as above, two leaves with small areas of loss along fore-edge. A simple but satisfying decorated binding. (Inventory #: 37512)
