London: Faber & Faber, 1930 First edition, one of 1,000 copies printed. Publisher's pale blue paper wrappers, quadruple-ruled in red, lettered in black, text block edges untrimmed, some pages uncut. A very good copy with a touch of wear and toning to extremities, front hinge cracked but holding, otherwise very bright and clean. First printed privately in 1928, it was not until 1930 that Auden's first book of poetry was printed for trade, when T.S. Eliot, then director of Faber & Faber, accepted it for publication with the addition of several new poems. This edition includes numbered poems as well as Auden's play, Paid on Both Sides. Notably, Auden's work had a prominent impact on other British and Irish writers at the time, including Christopher Isherwood and Cecil Day-Lewis, to whom the book is dedicated. This group of writers became known as the Auden generation, and shared left-wing political views.. First Edition.. Soft Cover. Very Good. (Inventory #: WHA012)
