London: Pickering, 1830. [4], 68 pp. 12mo. Bound in three quarters green moroco, t.e.g., by Chatelin. [4], 68 pp. 12mo. A scarce work by Montagu (1770-1851), the English barrister and friend to many literary luminaries of his day, including Wordsworth (who lodged with Montagu for several months in 1795), Lamb, Southey, Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft (at whose death he was present), and Shelley, whom he represented in the chancery proceedings over the custody of Shelley's children (ODNB). Montagu also edited the 16 volume Works of Francis Bacon (1825-1837) and wrote on a wide variety of topics. Here he takes up the causes and uses of laughter-- deploying numerous court room anecdotes to illustrate his points.
