Flowers of the Field and Forest.
1883. · Boston:
by Sprague, Isaac.
4to, original decorated blue cloth, top cover with elaborate floral design stamped on it, illustrated, spine with gilt title, gilt page edges, 154 pp. Binding a little loose, edge and corner wear, piece missing from lower spine, hinges a little weak, even toning and aging; otherwise in good shape. Plates are bright and clean. This work contains 14 beautiful chromolithograph plates of flowers. According to Bennett (American Color Plate Books page 100) Sprague produced a lot of floral plates and this work is representative. Bennett adds that Sprague's work is "uniformly fine" and everything he did should be of interest to the collector. Rev. A. B. Hervey wrote the text for this book, with extracts from Longfellow, Bryant, Lowell, Emerson and others. (Inventory #: 106485)
