1749 · Ephrata, PA
by BRAGHT, Tieleman Janszoon Van
Ephrata, PA: Drucks und Verlags der Brüderschafft, 1749. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, published 1748-49, folio, original dark brown (nearly black) beveled leather boards, 56, 478, [iv] (unnumb. first index), [xiv], 950, [x] (unnumb. second index) (1512pp), with rare engraved frontispiece of martyrs being tortured (sometimes not bound in or excised), John the Baptist baptizing Jesus, Moses, et al. Very good copy, clasps and straps present but detached and leaving leather stubs; could be repaired, some light restoration to outer joints, minor rubbing to leather, endpapers a little wrinkled, old owner's name on pastedown, rear endpaper re-inserted neatly on a stub of tan japanese paper, no spine label (as usual), light worming to bottom of frontispiece, second title page present as called for, pages bright and unmarked, a very good sharp copy of this Mennonite classic that took years (and over two dozen press people, translators and printers) for the Ephrata Cloister to produce and was the largest book published in the colonies until the Revoliution. Certainly one of the funamental PA Dutch books to have in any such collection.
