signed first edition Hardcover
1953 · New York
by Ward Greene
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1953. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Joe G. Rinaldi. A wonderful Association copy: INSCRIBED BY WARD ("JIMMIE") GREENE TO CHESTER GOULD, AUTHOR OF THE "DICK TRACY" COMIC STRIPS, on the front free endpaper. A very solid copy to boot of the 1953 stated 1st printing. Tight and Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact ($2.95), VG dustjacket, with chipping (representing 3" of loss) along the rear panel's lower-edge and very light wear along the spine ends. Still though, attractive and very presentable. Octavo, Foreword by Walt Disney, nicely illustrated thruout by Joe G. Rinaldi. (Ward Greene for many years was editor and manager of the newspaper syndicate "King Features" {where Chester Gould's comic strip "Dick Tracy" enjoyed a long run} and it's against this backdrop that we can establish that the "Chester" in the inscription refers to Chester Gould. Furthermore, a number of Ward Greene's colleagues at "King Features" (including, apart from Gould, Hal Foster {"Prince Valiant", "Tarzan"}) were known to refer to Greene as "Jimmie").
