1948. An original pen and ink and watercolor in a caricature style, depicting many displaced people / refugees on the transport ship USS General W. M. Black. During World War II the USS General W. M. Black was a troop ship transporting thousands of troops (and casualties) to and from the war, both in the Pacific and the European theater. It was decommissioned in 1946, and returned to service as a transport ship, primarily moving displaced persons and refugees from Europe to refugee camps. This watercolor painting by "Sulima W." [perhaps a Polish refugee] is titled "Voyage No 5. From Bremerhaven, Germany - Valparaiso, Chile". It depicts the displaced people with comic charm . 12 1/4" x 14 1/4". (Inventory #: 282520)
