Bordeaux: Feret & Fils, 1908. Softcover. fair to g+. Quarto. 198pp. + 1 plate and a map. Printed beige wrappers, with black lettering on the front cover and spine. Pages uncut. The work is scholarly text chronicling the research into the history of Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community of Bordeaux, undertaken by Professor Georges Cirot of the University of Bordeaux's Academy of History. In the post-Spanish inquisition period, Sephardic Jews came to make up an increasingly significant percentage of the Jewish population of Bordeaux. The book includes some in text figures and as well as quite a lot of bibliographic footnotes throughout. The back of the book includes a photographic plate, reproducing some headstones from old Portuguese Jewish cemeteries in photogravure. This is followed by a fold-out detailed map of Bordeaux (from 1907), with an overlay on tissue, with a more detailed map printed in red. Publisher's advertisements on the back cover. Text in French.
Laid into the book are 4 loose double-sided printed pages from the March 12 and 19th, 1926 issues of the French Jewish magazine "L'univers Israelite". Both pertain to the history of Portuguese Jews in France.
Wrappers with chipping, rubbing and sunning to extremities. Spine heavily chipped. Interior with starting at p.49, but book block still fairly tight overall. Some markings in pencil in the first section of the text. Age toning to the edges of pages. Wrappers in fair, interior in good+ condition overall.
