The 17th Century surveys of fungi were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of the Accademia dei Lincei. After his death, the papers were acquired by scholar and patron Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) who joined the work with his own collection. These studies were particularly interesting at the time due to their pioneering use of the microscope, which had been bequeathed to Cesi by Galileo.
