A "Centennial Souvenir." A Brief History of Tarrytown, from 1680 to September 1880. With a Map of Tarrytown as it was One Hundred Years Ago
Tarrytown, NY: Geo. L. Wiley & Bro, 1880. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 24 pp, in original wrappers, illustrated with wood engraving of the memorial erected near the spot where Major Andre was captured in 1780. Attractive colored map (14 x 18 inches) of Tarrytown in 1780 tipped in on verso of front wrapper. There is a small (1/8 inch diameter) hole in the front wrap, and the entire pamphlet is a bit rumpled, but clean, tightly bound and on the whole very good. Not surprisingly, this short history has much to say about Washington Irving and about the arrest of British officer Major John Andre, who was ultimately hanged for assisting Benedict Arnold's attempted surrender of the fort at West Point to the British.
