New York: William Morrow & Co.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1935. First American Edition. Hardcover. [good sound copy, very light soiling to edges of covers and bottom edge of text block, discoloration to pastedowns/endpapers; jacket shows a little wear at extremities, some minor creasing along top edge of front panel, a couple of tiny edge-nicks]. The author's third novel, about a young chorus girl who grew up in the West Indies, but is now living in England -- "a bewildered girl adrift in an alien land -- a creature made for warmth and simple happiness [but] incapable of directing her own life, and with no one to help her." Clearly inspired by Rhys's own experiences -- she was born on the island of Dominica, sent to school in London at the age of 16, and after refusing her family's request to return home she worked as (you guessed it) a chorus girl -- the novel originated as her written account, circa 1912, of an unhappy affair with a married man. This and other early writing was primarily for herself, but in 1924, while living in Paris with her first husband, she was encouraged to show her work to Ford Madox Ford, who published her first story and was instrumental in the publication of her first story collection in 1927. Two novels followed -- "Postures" (later re-titled "Quartet") and "After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie" -- after which she resurrected this earlier material and re-worked it into the present book, originally published in England in 1934. After the appearance of her subsequent novel, "Good Morning, Midnight," in 1939, she more or less dropped off the literary map for more than 25 years, not re-emerging until 1966 with her novel "Wide Sargasso Sea," a great critical and popular success which is now considered her best (and best-known) book. .
